Match Reports: 23rd and 24th October

23rd: Dolgopolov v Chardy. Dolgo went into this match as favourite. Ranked number 24 in the world, he was up against Chardy, the world number 34, who he had beaten comfortably in their last encounter in Mexico this year. However, this match did not go the same way. Even though Dolgo won the first set, he was broken in the very first game of the match and it was obvious he had a fight on his hands. Indeed, Dolgo lost his first service game in all three sets of the match. This eventually took its toll and Chardy went on to win a second set tie break and finish the match with a 7-5 score in the third. Chardy, went on to beat Busta very comfortably (6-1 6-2) in the next round and as I write this, he is waiting to play Robredo in the semi finals. 

24th: Robredo v Andujar 7-6 6-4.  Andujar-Alba played a very good match here even if he lost in two sets.  He showed great fight to break Robredo back in both sets, and saved two set points in the 10th game of the first set to eventually take it to a tie break. Robredo kept his nerve and only dropped one point on serve in the tie break and took the set. More of the same in the second set, though Robredo was the more dominant of the two Spaniards after saving a couple of break points in his first service game of the set. Andujar did break Robredo’s serve in the second set but was unable to handle some great returns from Robredo who broke him twice to take the match. Robredo, as mentioned above, now faces Chardy in the next round.

24th Raonic v Goffin. As good as Raonic is, there is no one in better form than Goffin right now. Before this match, Goffin was on a run of 14 straight wins. Raonic had won his last 2 against Young and Johnson, but previous to that he’d lost to both Berankis and Monaco. These guys had only played once (in 2011, Raonic won due to injury to Goffin). But I couldn’t overlook Goffin’s current form. Things looked great at the start of the match when Goffin broke Raonic in the third game. But he couldn’t serve out the set and was broken back to level the score at 5-5. The set went to a tie break and Goffin was broken early and was always playing catch-up and lost the tie break 7-3. Raonic didnt lose any of his 5 service points in the tie break. To be honest, I thought at that point, this might be the end of Goffin’s great run!!!! But gladly I was very wrong!! Goffin went up a gear and took the next two sets without dropping serve. Goffin now plays the Croation Coric in the semi finals. Though Coric has been good, I think it will be Goffin in the final..
