Match Reports 12th and 14th October

12th: Diyas v Stosur 6-7 3-6. I was tempted to give the +4.5 handicap on Diyas on this match – turns out it would have been the right choice (barely). I decided to go for the match win at half the normal stakes, which, in hindsight, was a good choice. The better choice would have not to give the tips at all but it was a very minor hit to our bank which is still a healthy +37% this month. I have to say this match could have turned out very differently has Diyas taken some vital chances in the first set. Diyas broke Stosur in the very first game of the match and held her next 4 service games and was serving for the set at 5-4 but Stosur was able to break back and force the set to a tie break. Unbelievably, Diyas had two set points in the tie break but the experienced Stosur was able to maintain her nerve and take the set. Stosur, the world number 18 and top seed in this tournament went on to take the second set 6-3 with two breaks of serve in the first and 9th games of the set. Again Diyas had chances to break back but the world number 34 couldn’t take her chances. Diyas only converted one break point in the match and that was the real difference between the two players on the day.

14th: Mayer to beat Young 6-4 6-4. Mayer, ranked number 25 in the ATP and 5th seed in Sweden won this match pretty comfortably. There were only 2 breaks in the match – in the 5th game of the first set and the third game of the second set. Mayer was comfortable on his serve for the most part and only gave away one break point in the match. Mayer will now go on to play Bachinger on Thursday. Bachinger, ranked 203, shouldn’t pose any problems for Mayer who will most likely face Dolgopolov, the 4th seed following that. That match I’ll be looking forward to…
