Match Reports: 27th & 28th October

27th . Cabal/Farah v Monfils/Simon 7-5 6-4. Cabal/Farah came through this relatively easilt after being broken in the first set. They came back strongly to take the set and had no real issues in the second set. They go on to meet Grannolers-Pujol/Lopez in the next round on Thursday. Cabal/Farah will have a tougher test against the number 5 seeds where they go in as slight underdogs. Cabal/Farah lead the h2h stats against Granollers/Lopez 3-1, winning both times they have met this year. I expect a tight match between the pairs.

27th Benneteau v Lu 6-3 6-4. Benneteau and Lu had met twice before this match – both winning one each. Notably, Lu’s win was back in Eastbourne in 2012, whereas Benneteau’s victory was more recent. Eastbourne 2014. Benneteau had a good run in his last tournament in Shanghai, knocked out in the quarters by Roger Federer, the eventual winner in Shanghai. Benneteau picked up where where he left off in Shanghai (before the Federer match) against Lu and was easily into his stride. He had small issues with his first serve early in the match but once he broke Lu in the 4th game of the first set, he went on to win quite comfortably. He goes on to meet Andy Murray on Thursday. With Andy’s current form, I wont be backing the Frenchman in the next round!!

28th Butorac/Klaasen v Herbert/Mahut 7-6 7-6. A tight affair as is obvious from the scoreline!! Butorac/Klaasen really struggled with serve here in the first set, giving away 6 break points, but saved them all. Herbert/Mahut had their chances and couldn’t take them. Herbert/Mahut served superbly in the first set right until the tie break, where they lost 7-3, with Buorac/Klaasen winning all of their service points. The second set had one break of serve each, and Herbert/Mahut saved a break point at 5-6 to take the set to another tie break, but to no avail. Only one break of serve was enough for Butorac/Klaasen to take the set and the match.
