Nishikori beat Medvedev in a very entertaining encounter in the final at Brisbane. Nishikori was broken early in the first but reacted well by taking 5 games in a row to go on and take the set. Seemingly coasting to victory, he dropped serve in the second set and the match was forced into a decider. Medvedev dropped serve 3 times to lose the final set and the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
In the WTA Final, the World No. 7 Karolina Pliskova won as expected against the World No. 24 Lesia Tsurenko in another match that went to 3 sets. Pliskova was broken early in set 1 and was unable to recover the set. She was broken again very early in the second but rallied back to take the second. Pliskova showed her class in the final set where she was rarely troubled and took the match 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Overall, a great tournament in Brisbane and here’s hoping for more of the same in Sydney, Hobart and Auckland.
