Notes 8th and 9th October

8th: Tomljanovic v Duan : 6-4 6-4. In my trading tips write-up I said the following about this match: Definitely the crisper hitter of the balls for me is Tomljanovic. A bit surprised by the odds here. I think this could be a straightforward win for her. This turned out to be very true. I really didn’t feel that Duan had the game to beat Tomljanovic. Tomljanovic started the match very well and was two breaks up at 4-1 in the first set. This looked like it was a bit of a breeze but Duan, to my surprise broke back twice immediately to level the first set at 4-4. One more break from Tomljnovic was enough to take the first set 6-4. The first set was typical of a set in WTA wirh 5 breaks of serve. The second set was more like an ATP match with just one break of serve going to Tomljanovic in the fifth game of the set. Tomljanovic had her chances to take the match in the 9th game but was unable to take either of two match points. She won her next service game to take the match 6-4 6-4 and earn us a nice few quid at the same time!

9th: Hsieh v Zhang 3-6 6-3 7-6. Zhang is a very good server – no denying that, but Hsieh has an amazing defensive game and that’s the main reason I gave this tip. I really believed that Hsieh could negate the serve of Zhang in this match. Zhang played very well in the first set and deserviedly took the set. Hsieh wasn’t up to her normal standard but stepped it up in the second set. She broke Zhang twice – the crucial break coming in the 8th game when Hsieh took a 5-3 lead and went on to serve out the set. The third set was a dramatic affair. Hsieh seemed to be cruising to victory, and money seemed to be cruising into my account, when she took a 5-2 lead in the final set and now had to win just one of her next two service games to win the match. But there’s no such thing as easy money!! And she consequently lost her next two service games and the set eventually went to a tie break. Thankfully, however, Hsieh won the tie break and the money is now firmly in my account!!!
