Match Reports: 25th & 26th October
25th Robredo v Chardy 7-6 7-6. Chardy was left scratching his head after this one!! He had 3 set points in the first set tie break and managed to lose the set. He also served for the second set but couldn’t see it out. Chardy only managed to convert two of his 6 break point chances, whereas Robredo was much more efficient in that department. Chardy played a good match, with 60% first serve compared to just 49% for Robredo and the players were pretty even in most departments, except break points which proved to be he deciding factor. Robredo now goes on to meet Andy Murray in the Valencia final where he will start as a big underdog. Murray can expect a tough match as Robredo has shown tremendous form and spirit in his matches. Robredo hasn’t dropped a set so far in this tournament. I expect that to change against Murray who will be his toughest opponent so far.
Added note: Murray won the final 3-6 7-6 7-6
25th Halep v Radwanska 6-2 6-2. Going into this one, these players had met twice in 2014 with each winning one. Radwanska’s form wasn’t very good going in and the match really went as I expected. Halep played a brilliant first set – she had Radwanska all over the court with some sublime tennis and great shot selection. The second set was just as dominant as Halep broke Radwanska 3 times, but losing one service game herself. Halep played Serena Williams in the final on Sunday and thats the topic of my next tip below..
26th Williams v Halep 6-3 6-0. Halep had played well against Radwanska and Williams had a tough previous match against Wozniacki. I was very close to tipping Wozniacki beating Williams but it just fell below my acceptable confidence level. In the end I was glad I didn’t give it but what a match!! When Serena eventually won it, I really believed she could win the final. Wozniacki had shown great form and was a tough nut to crack. Serena, after a slow start, eventually beat Halep pretty easily. Halep will be very disappointed with her second set performance. A great Tour Championships won deservedly by Serena Williams.
